//June 13, 2003 - Shoe Nirvana :

I found them. Finally. Them. The Shoes. For ages now I’ve wanted a pair of platforms, red shoes, wooden shoes, and shoes with metal on ‘em. I also needed a new pair of sandals for this summer so, providing I could’ve even found what I was looking for that would’ve been at least 4 different pairs of shoes. And now, I’ve found them. The single shoe that manages to be everything.

If Dad still had the digicam from work I’d regale you with photos. As it is you get to just read about them. The platform is 1.5” thick, and the heel is 3.75” high - a chunky heel though that totally balances the shoe and prevents them from being like… stripper shoes or something equally skanky (a time and a place I always say). Big wide red leather straps cross over the top - definitely over the top of the foot and not the toe. The leather is a lighter red than I’m used to - I usually go for a bloody burgundy. These though are more like a dull fire engine red. Bright red for summer, but nothing shiny or plasticky. And then the topmost strap has a shiny silver buckle and two silver rivets. And they’re so comfortable! Is there anything better than new shoes?

Only baby plants. And just barely. I’ve only just discovered that one of the baby cucumbers I’ve got outside (in the ground, not containers) has got a little yellow bud on it. Soon - cucumber flowers! And then - cucumbers! This means pickles, and soaps/lotions with real non-grocery store cucumbers.

Everyone should go visit Noemi’s lovely distro and check out my soap zine in the DIY category. There’s just something thrilling about reading a description of your work on somebody’s page. It’s like “Hey! I count, really!”

I’ve been watching Trigun lately. It’s the perfect substitute for Buffy - at least the way I watch. One of very few stories where I’m actually watching to see the hero win, and not the villain’s character development. It’s got something to do with Vash being an authentic hero who consistently gets the raw end of the deal. He’s also not all-about-saving-the-day, since badness follows him. Most of the saving he does is in response to the trouble he’s caused (by simply being not through any direct action), so he catches more flack than praise. This is why I’ve always liked Batman better than Superman. I mean, not over fond of the hero angle to begin with. Villains are more realistic portrayals of human complexity. But give me a hero with weaknesses and faults and conflicted interests and no fan-club? That’s something I can appreciate. Trigun’s villains are unappealing in respect to complexity and motivation. They’re pretty much evil. Interesting evil, but not dynamic or changing. They exist mostly as catalysts for the good guy’s journeys. They’re also remarkably absent. Like, there’re two main bad guys. I’ve got this sneaking suspicion that one of them’s locked up in deep freeze, and the other one hasn’t even confronted Vash yet. He just sends these really lame caricatures of henchmen (redundant I know, ‘cause henchmen are always lame.) that always get beat up. And it surprises me, but I’m really enjoying it. I think I’d like to see more stories where the good guys are more complex than the villains. ‘Cause when you’re always watching to see what happens to the bad guy, you just know you’ll be disappointed. At least this way, if you’re invested in the title character’s development you can expect consistent coverage and some kind of payoff (unless, of course, you’re in a Whedonverse, where you can expect your lead character to suffer and die).

Shoooes! It’s so perfect, when you find THE PAIR.
Surprisingly, I’ve never watched Trigun. Hm. Heard of it, but haven’t gotten around to it.

I mostly just catch whatever anime my brother insists is good - which means more action and mecha than I’d have ever seen on my own. I mean, he’s building a GUNDAM for crying out loud.

So I’ve been waiting on CN Trigun (courtesy of my brother’s recommendation) for awhile now, but managed to miss the first airing. And now, with 5 episodes left of the second airing, they’ve replaced it with Reign the Conqueror. It’s evil. *sigh*
