Dude. I was in an earthquake. I woke up the other day to hear the VHS tapes rattling around by my TV (and my plastic happy meal toys shaking on my monitor) and shaking around like I was in a quarter-powered cheap-motel room bed. Craziest out-of-context feeling. And beside my pillow the cat was sitting up looking surprised, sleepy and just a bit freaked out. So I looked at the clock (7:37 = too early, no one should be awake that time of day - just wrong) and went back to sleep. I didn’t think much of it since no one else felt anything (they were asleep), but still I just knew. Really, it was the look on the cat’s face that convinced me I wasn’t a.) Crazy or b.) Dreaming.
Finally my dad got online and on the USGS site found that last Friday there was a 4.5 earthquake up near Paducah (Kentucky). It cracked some sidewalks and knocked pictures off the walls. And this wasn’t even on the news! Man, I’m smack in the middle of the New Madrid Seismic Zone. The most active zone east of the Rockies. They say that 3 big ones back in 1811 triggered aftershocks that were felt for years afterwards and caused even more damage. I had no idea! Apparently east coast quakes are felt farther (10 times farther) because of bedrock and stuff. Crazy. Everybody knows you’re s’posed to be on the West Coast to feel earthquakes!
My plants are thriving! The broccoli is huge, we have baby cayenne peppers, a teeny tiny new roma tomato, and the oregano and peppermint I planted in the sides of my strawberry jar have pushed up through the top with my chives. Additionally, there’s a tiny leafy plant (on the right) in there and I have no idea what it is. I don’t quite want oregano and peppermint in the top of my jar, so I’ll probably cut them down next time I need some. But I think I’ll leave that extra little plant in there with the chives, at least until I figure out what it is. Ginger’s got all kinds of new growth. And to think that I was worried I’d kill her.

Earthquakes are interesting, aren’t they? A nice shake, rattle, and roll?
(Well, truthfully, I’ve slept through most of the 8 or so quakes we’ve had here, but the one in 2001 was pretty cool— and in the daytime.)
I’ve been wondering about that New Madrid Fault from time to time since I cleared out of that area. Supposed to be a pretty big one coming from it one of these days…..
