//July 20, 2003 - Skunks & Pirates :

Yesterday, while we were outside on the deck oohing and ahhing over the container garden (red little cayenne peppers!) my dad went around the house to investigate this noise (woodpecker) and found the cutest little baby skunk!

This story doesn’t have an unhappy odourific ending, but there was a moment there when one of the dogs started to bark (more specifically, he opened his mouth and said “Woof” and I immediately dragged him into the house) when the situation looked a little iffy. The skunk didn’t like what he heard and promptly tensed up and looked around. Thankfully he relaxed quickly, ‘cause man… We’re talking maybe 9 feet away from the house. We’d have never escaped. We’d have had to move with no hope of actually selling the home. And had the dogs been out in the yard and not on the deck?! Argh. The dogs would have to live outside.

Anyways, skunks are cute! Kisses! They kinda waddle, they look a little drowsy/stupid, and their white stripes are all dingy and dirty. This one was so tiny that it was a little sad to think about him roaming through the woods all by himself. Overall though, I much prefer watching the deer family that strolls through from time to time.

Finally went to a 9:45 showing of the Pirates of the Caribbean last night. Only one of the best movies ever. I continue to be amazed at Johnny Depp’s range. I mean, I sat through this movie and never once thought “Look, it’s Edward Scissorhands the pirate!” And the movie was so balanced! All the storyline/plot loose ends were nicely tied up, they managed to split the “lead” 3 ways and still have well-developed supporting characters. And the scene with the prisoners luring the dog with the keys that Josie mentioned? Priceless! I just barely remember that from the Disney ride. I was about 7 when we went there, and managed to be much more preoccupied by how hot and uncomfortable I was. I totally would love to see this movie again. It’s got a super rewatch factor, like Goonies or The Burbs. Heh. Plus, you know, PIRATES! Who wouldn’t want a super-wide belt buckle and a ratty hat after that?

For now, I’m off to go see about putting stain/seal on the outside of the house. This needed done about 2 years ago, and they’ve already gotten started without me today. Gotta haul my weight. What's not to love?
