I’ve figured something out. About driving. It’s not speeding that’s appealing. I mean, sure, it’s exhilarating to go peeling around curves at breakneck speeds with the windows down and the radio blasting (‘cause it’s got to compete with the wind for auditory attention). But after a while, you’re just going fast. You’re speeding along, getting there faster, watching for speed traps. And unless you’re dealing with inclement weather, that’s all there is to it. Boring.

Acceleration is an altogether different story. Accelerating is thrilling whether you’re progressing from 20-40 or 50-70. That’s when you can actually feel the machine’s power, unlike speeding where any mechanical impulse is obscured by a steady buzz. Acceleration. Where the wind rushes in your open windows, whips your hair around in tangled messes, and just begs for a pulsing base line.
